The Tramp

A thousand bodies pass by
Strangers all
Men with dogs, women with dogs
Dogs with ear phones
Children with mobile phones
Hushed voices, silenced melodies
Drums like heartbeats in dissonance.
Sirens shriek.
Blue lights blink
A dark car speeds past
A dozen cars in tow
A criminal on the run
Or a politician in haste
Leafs fall
Feathers swing low to rest.
Night falls heavy with a thud
A thousand bodies pass by
Men with dogs, women with dogs
Empty streets
No one to say hello
No one to blame
No one to wish good night.
